Ensemble Gending focuses since its first concert in 1988 on new compositions for Javanese gamelan. Combinations are regularly made with other (western) instruments, particularly percussion,as well as with electronics and visuals. The Javanese gamelan is an inspiring sound source that forces composers to tread outside the familiar paths and make them reconsider the position of western music in relation to eastern musical cultures. The basic idea of Dutch composer Ton de Leeuw, from whose gamelan composition Gending the ensemble took its name, is still a source of inspiration: acculturation – the ability of cultures to learn from each other –, is as important as ever.
